kanz make their pieces in borosilicate glass, by hand, in venice: candle holders, tumblers, pitchers, bottles and vases. the colour is brushed on afterwards, so no two pieces carry it in quite the same way.

borosilicate is the glass of laboratories, thin and resistant to heat. on the table it almost disappears, and what stays is the colour at the base.

in autumn the light goes first. the afternoons shorten, the sun stays low over the roofs, and by five a lamp is already on somewhere in the flat. from now until march it is the object we look at most, and it decides what a room feels like after dark.

the lamps in this edit come from small workshops and are made slowly: earthenware bases painted by hand in portugal, under shades cut from leftover fashion fabric, and an oil lamp shaped from clear glass in venice. there is also a lamp cut from a single slab of marble, with nothing wasted. switched off, each of them still holds its place in the room.
